Oddballs and Oddities

Some of the quirks and quibbles taking place off the court during the US Open in New York…

Murray checks out Nobu
Team Murray celebrated Andy’s passage to the US Open semi-finals with a lovely evening out at New York’s famous Nobu. “Amazing food,” Murray said on his Facebook page.

Speaking of Murray, in case you didn’t see it, he produced a new sort of trickery during his win over Milos Raonic. Much more than just a backhand smash.

Fitness vs talent
Taylor Townsend is 16, the junior world No.1 and the Australian Open girls’ champion. But apparently her coaches have decreed that they don’t want her to play any tournaments, withdrawing her funding, until she gets fitter. So, if she wins the US Open girls’ title this week, perversely, they won’t be happy.

We know about the ATP’s big three, and big four, so well, that it’s hard to think of anyone else winning a Grand Slam title. But, what about the WTA’s big three?

For while the US Open men’s semi-finals only features one of the year’s Grand Slam champs, Novak Djokovic, and is the first time in 33 majors that neither Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal have been present in the last four, the US Open women’s semi-finals features all three of the year’s Grand Slam Champs – Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. So now who has the big stars?

Celebrities miss Roddick already
He’s only been retired for a couple of days, and already some of the world’s most famous faces are tweeting about his absence.

I shed a tear for you. Thank you for all the years of commitment to excellence. Going to miss it.’ – @TigerWoods

I miss my friend already. :(‘ – @serenawilliams

congrats to @andyroddick for an amazing career. Class act.#respect.’ – @AbbyWambach

Andy, my friend– you are a winner. Life goes on. Live it to the fullest‘ – @JimmyConnors

‘Thank you @andyroddick for carrying American tennis so many years…with intensity, charisma, and grace. Phenomenal athlete, better person.’ – @ZachJohnsonPGA

If you missed Roddick’s farewell speech on Arthur Ashe, do watch it. He nailed it, as per usual.

Is Caroline Rory’s good luck charm?
Caroline Wozniacki may have suffered her earliest exit in New York in years, but she’s certainly helping boyfriend Rory McIlroy win. The duo were sharing a golf cart’s back bench as McIlroy picked up the Deutsche Bank Championships in Massachusetts.

Federer gets his own bus
Roger Federer may not have won a US Open title in five years, but he did get his own US Open bus. Consolation, much? Thought not.

Seen Marion Bartoli practice?
You must. It’s intense.

Will Rafa be back this year?
It’s the question no one’s quite sure about. He’s certainly been doing a lot of stretching.
