US Open - shoes

Fashion hits and misses at Flushing Meadows

What they’re talking about in New York City:

Andy Roddick’s shoes. He’s no longer the American number one – John Isner has that status for The Open – but he is wearing some patriotic, red-white-and-blue shoes.

It takes a lot to upstage a Williams sister wearing a dress she had designed herself, with ‘Love’ script over red and black roses, but Bethanie Mattek-Sands managed it with her get-up. To play Venus, Sands wore a tank-top, wrist bands, compression socks and eye black, plus red hightops.

James Blake’s hat. USA Today didn’t like Blake’s “trucker hat”, describing it as “dorky” and “something you might find for two dollars at a gas station”.

Philipp Petzschner’s knee-high ‘compression’ socks.

Serena Williams was never going to make as much impact with her match-day dress – she wore blue – as she did with the red dress she wore for her appearance on the David Letterman Show the other day.
