The return of Rufus the Hawk

Thought For The Day – Rufus the Hawk

It was an out-pouring of support that nobody quite expected. In the midst of Wimbledon 2012, the tournament, fans and public were united by the plight of Rufus the Harris Hawk, stolen from the car park on Saturday, and reducing his owners to nervous wrecks. Rufus has been flying the Wimbledon skies for some years, tasked with chasing away the pigeons on a daily basis during The Championships, and intermittently year-round.

He even has his own twitter account – @RufusTheHawk. With talk of a Crimewatch reconstruction on the cards, the many news outlets covering The Championships did what they could in order to bring Rufus back safely, until, late on Sunday afternoon, he was found on Wimbledon Common. A rather sore leg the only casualty, he is expected to be back patrolling the Wimbledon Grounds on Tuesday. Wimbledon has a new hero.
