Thought for the day
Anyone milling about the grounds on the first day of Wimbledon 2012 might have noticed a new structure sticking up into the skyline of the Broadcast Centre roof. Looking rather like an outdoor concert venue, it is not, as one might think, a new venue dedicated to Sir Cliff sing-a-longs, more’s the pity. It is, in fact, the home of Live @ Wimbledon, the AELTC’s new online TV channel, which made its debut at 11.30am on Monday, broadcasting to the UK and Americas on Wimbledon.com
Fronted by Annabel Croft and Mats Wilander, Live @ Wimbledon is a five-man band of tennis chatter, match clips, and roving reporters, aiming to bring every bit of Wimbledon to life for the online viewer. Featuring Chief Executive Richard Lewis, Sam Stosur and Fernando Verdasco up in the studio on the opening day, Live @ Wimbledon also dropped in a quiz with defending champion Novak Djokovic, exclusive interviews with Roger Federer and Li Na about their favourite Wimbledon memories, took Feliciano Lopez on a drive around Wimbledon village, and even had time to discover the most extraordinary Sharapova fans you might ever meet, who emblazoned why they would like the Russian as a wife on very white t-shirts in very big black bold print.
The exciting part, though, asides from the famous voices and faces, is the ability to dip in and out of live match coverage. We saw Oliver Golding get off to a flier against Igor Andreev, Venus Williams’ final game against Elena Vesnina, and even Roger Federer’s fleet of foot at intervals. The interesting thing, of course, will be to see how the channel keeps up its momentum, whether the studio keeps its roof on, and what gems the brainboxes behind it unearth over the next 12 days.
