Dominika Cibulkova

Could Paris end up with the shortest ever champion?

Some Parisians used to marvel at how a player as short as Justine Henin – five foot and five inches ‘tall’ – could be so successful on clay. Now they are having to consider Dominika Cibulkova, who is a couple of inches shorter than Henin.

The Slovakian, who defeated world No 1 Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round on Sunday, is now three matches away from becoming the shortest grand slam champion of the modern era. If Cibulkova is to make the biggest possible statement for the vertically challenged, what would be better than beating someone in the final who is a foot taller, a certain Maria Sharapova?
